What is a 65W GaN charger?

A 65W GaN charger delivers 65 watts of USB-C Power Delivery using Gallium Nitride semiconductor technology. GaN III chargers are up to 50% smaller than equivalent silicon chargers, run cooler, and support PD 3.0 and PPS protocols for maximum compatibility with laptops, phones, and tablets.

Which laptops does a 65W GaN charger work with?

A 65W GaN charger works with all USB-C PD laptops: MacBook Air (all M-series), MacBook Pro 13" and 14", Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre x360, ASUS ZenBook 14, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and most ultrabooks. Only the MacBook Pro 16" requires 96W+ for full-speed charging.

Do I need a special cable for a 65W GaN charger?

For laptop charging you need a USB-C to USB-C cable rated for 65W or higher. Look for cables rated at 100W or 240W with an E-marker chip. For phone charging, any standard USB-C cable works fine.

Is a 65W GaN charger safe for iPhones and Samsung phones?

Yes. USB Power Delivery is a negotiated protocol. Your iPhone draws up to 27W and your Samsung draws up to 45W via PPS. The charger delivers whatever the device requests. All SmartGear GaN chargers include over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protection.

MacBook Air Compatibility Guide

Best 65W GaN Charger for MacBook Air UK

The MacBook Air M1, M2, and M3 all charge at up to 67W via USB-C Power Delivery — meaning a 65W GaN charger covers virtually every real-world scenario at full speed. Our top pick is the UGREEN Nexode 65W: it delivers the full 65W on its primary USB-C port, has a foldable UK plug, and fits any bag side pocket. Apple ships the base MacBook Air M3 with only a 30W adapter — a 65W GaN charger charges it twice as fast while simultaneously charging your iPhone and AirPods.

Why Not Just Use Apple's 30W?

Apple's bundled 30W charger tops up the MacBook Air at roughly half speed and can only charge one device. A 65W GaN unit delivers full-speed charging to the MacBook Air and simultaneously charges your iPhone at 27W and AirPods at 5W — all from a single UK plug the same size as Apple's 30W brick.

65W vs 96W for MacBook Air

Apple also sells a 70W charger for MacBook Air. In real-world tests, the 65W GaN charges the Air 13” only 4–5 minutes slower over a full cycle. The 65W wins on size, price, and versatility — it charges phones, tablets, and laptops from one unit. A 100W desktop charger is only needed for MacBook Pro 14”/16”.

Cable matters: Use a USB-C cable rated for 65W or higher with an E-marker chip for reliable full-speed delivery to your MacBook Air. Our 240W USB-C cables are rated well above 65W and cost from £8.99.
