A Network Attached Storage (NAS) device connects to your home router and acts as a private cloud. Stream 4K media to any TV in your home, back up every device automatically, and access files remotely — without paying monthly cloud fees. UGREEN's latest AI-powered NAS even offers on-device photo organisation. Read our UGREEN NAS review for a hands-on look.
USB-C external SSDs deliver read speeds of 1,000 MB/s or more — fast enough to edit 4K video directly from the drive. They're shock-resistant, pocket-sized, and perfect for photographers, videographers, and anyone moving large files between machines. Our NAS for content creators guide compares the best options.
The 3-2-1 rule is the gold standard: keep three copies of your data, on two different media types, with one stored off-site. A NAS covers the local backup; an external SSD or cloud sync covers the off-site copy. Automating this with your NAS's built-in backup tools means you never lose a file to hardware failure or ransomware.
A NAS is ideal for households with multiple users who need shared, always-available storage. An external drive is simpler and cheaper for single-user, plug-and-go backup.
For photo and document backup, 2–4 TB is plenty. For 4K video libraries or media streaming, start at 8 TB. NAS devices with RAID support let you add redundancy without losing all your capacity.
USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) saturates most SATA SSDs. For NVMe speeds, look for Thunderbolt 3/4 enclosures. For NAS, Gigabit or 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet handles most streaming and backup tasks.
A NAS is a dedicated file server on your home network. If you want to stream media to multiple TVs, automatically back up phones and laptops, or access files remotely without cloud subscriptions, a NAS is an excellent investment. See our home office NAS setup guide.
For pure storage capacity and cost, NAS-rated HDDs (like WD Red or Seagate IronWolf) are the standard choice. For a silent, fast cache or small all-SSD NAS, use NAS-optimised SSDs.
A single hour of 4K ProRes footage is roughly 110 GB. If you edit regularly, start with at least 4 TB of fast SSD storage, plus a larger NAS or HDD archive for finished projects.
For any file over a few GB, yes. External SSDs are 5–20× faster, far more reliable, and offer much larger capacities (up to 4 TB). Flash drives remain useful only for small, quick file transfers.
